The organisers of the Best of Nollywood (BON) awards have revealed plans to honour veteran Nollywood actors, Adebayo Salami (Oga Bello) and Liz Benson at this year’s awards ceremony scheduled to hold on October 4, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

According to the Founder/ Executive Producer of BON, Seun Oloketuyi, another Nollywood great and pioneer of Kannywood, representing the Hausa-language film industry based in Kano, will also be duly recognised for his contribution towards the movie industry. “Last year, Pete Edochie and Mrs. Lanre Hassan (Mama Awero), were given special recognition awards,” he said.

Also, when he was prodded to explain the relevance of the Best Kiss in Movie award that was introduced three years ago, Oloketuyi said: “We don’t do voting in BON. After the screeners have done their job, the jury will come and choose the winners. But we wanted something that will be interactive to people who watch the movies and these are categories that are not professional. If you nominate an up-and-coming actress for Best Actress of the Year and you also nominate a big actress for the same category, viewers will not vote based on the movie, but on the popularity of the actors. So, we feel that this amounts to injustice. More so, because a lot of people who watch our movies like to enjoy some fun, we decided to create that category.”

Nollywood actor, James Ikechukwu Okolue, popularly known as Jim Iyke, on Wednesday apologised over an Instagram message he sent on the Ebola virus. According to the controversial actor, he did not mean to scare anyone or make mockery of the disease situation.

“May I humbly apologise if my comments on Ebola – based on fear – were taken out of context. The last thing I wanted to do was to alarm anyone,” he said in statement.

Iyke, last week, posted a photo of himself at the airport in Monrovia, capital of Liberia, about to jet off from that country.

According to the post, Iyke had fled the country, cutting short his business trip over fears of contracting the disease.

The virus is believed to have killed over 800 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since the outbreak began in February, according to World Health Organisation (WHO) records.

Following unpleasant reaction from fans, the actor has also rendered an apology to families and persons affected by the deadly virus.

“My heart goes out to all the families who have been affected by the Ebola virus – those who have lost their lives or loved ones, those who are still bravely fighting the disease and all of the communities who are battling to keep the infection under control. You are all in my prayers,” he said.

On the need to have him screened of the virus, the actor added: “As I travel constantly across continents, most recently USA, Senegal, Liberia, Ghana, Gambia, I have been screened where and when necessary along with the other passengers.

“I believe it is the responsibility of every citizen to be vigilant and help contain the outbreak by following the advice of the local and international medical professionals and government officials,” he stated.

While on concert in Philadelphia, Nigerian singer, Davido, ran into mucky waters when a twitter fan accused him of stigmatising his Liberian fans over Ebola pandemic. The fan who tweeted with the handle @Djversatile Tenelee, said;” I’m gonna keep it real with my folks. Something did not sit well with me after Davido concert tonight at Trilogy Night Club in Philadelphia. One thing Nigeria artistes or any African artists should know when it comes to Africa is that, it should be where you advocate, because at the end of the day its home. Don’t matter what part of Africa you are from. As we all know it’s a Ebola epidemic in Liberia and most part of West Africa.

Upon the way to Philadelphia for a concert, Davido & HNK gang mentioned they did not want to contract Ebola from Liberian girls. I for one felt upset knowing most of his fans are from Liberia.

Immediately the message was released, it became a hot gist on twitter. Shortly afterwards, a twitter row had ensued among his fans who were divided on the issue.

Another fan with the tweeter handle @barbybenson, who didn’t believe that Davido could say such had to reach out to the music star. “Please address it cuz I honestly love ur music and respect u as an artist and is upset by it,” he tweeted.

Upon reading it, Davido replied the fan with a tweet; “Please don’t believe the rumours people are so jobless to make up stuff and put false words into my mouth! Did not and cannot say such things”.

The reigning hip hop sensation who is presently on tour US and has been enjoying mad love from his fans across the globe.

Like his previous works, The Ascension album, by Nigerian pop singer, 2face Idibia, has attained international feat, barely two weeks after it was released.

The album premiered at number 12 on the charts under the “World Albums” category of the universally-acclaimed ‘BillBoard World Album Chart’.

Apparently, the achievement is exciting to the artiste and his 960 Music label, as he continues to blaze the trail among artistes of his generation.

“2face Idibia would like to say a big “Thank You” to Beat FM, Cool FM, Inspiration FM, Brilla FM, Eko FM, Top Radio FM, Bond Fm, Rhythm FM, Rainbow FM, Wazobia FM, Traffic Radio, Classic FM , Metro FM, SMOOTH FM, Nigeria Info, RayPowerFM, StarFM, Radio Continental, Naija Fm, Unilag FM, Choice FM  City FM, NOUN FM, Faji Fm, Radio Lagos, MiTV, AIT, TVC, STV, NTA, Galaxy TV, Nigiezie, MTV Base, Channel O, Soundcity, Trace, HIP TV and all other Blogs, Radio and TV Stations who have shown continuous support over the years,” a statement from 960 Music company reads in part.

The listing of The Ascension is a major achievement for an African artiste.

According to BillBoard, Chart positions are usually determined based on key fan interactions with music, including album sales and downloads, track downloads, radio airplay and touring, as well as streaming and social interactions on Facebook, Twitter, Vevo, YouTube, Spotify and other popular online destinations for music.

The inclusion of 2Face Idibia’s The Ascension album on the charts is an indication of the general success of the album, not only in Nigeria, but across the continent and the entire globe.

Elizabeth Atuche born again

HOW times change. One of Nigeria’s high flying social birds, Elizabeth Atuche, wife of former Managing Director of the defunct Bank PHB Plc, Francis Atuche, has had to abandon her comfort zone in the social arena to seek respite in the house of God after the knocks she suffered with her husband. Today, Elizabeth is a staunch believer and ardent church attendant.

The rumour mill has it that she was forced to seek solace in God because of her husband’s travails. Rather than sit back to enjoy the fruits of his labour for many years as a financial expert, Atuche has been a regular face in court since his inglorious exit as the helmsman at the then Bank PHB. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refused to back down on his case and appears determined to see his back as he matches into jail.

Atuche was one of the bank chief executives who allegedly fleeced customers and shareholders of their hard-earned moneys. Atuche is answering court cases bordering on corrupt enrichment and other unethical practices, which allegedly caused Bank PHB to go down and had to be mopped up by AMCON.

Feeling the heat as the next of kin to the embattled banker, Elizabeth has taken her husband’s case to God, perhaps for mercy and grace. She has made a sharp U-turn that saw her drop her social life to embrace the bible.

She has also cut down considerably on her weight, wearing a new frame some say might not be unconnected with incessant prayer and fasting.

AFTER what seems like a hiatus, Baba Nee, who sang the hit track, Omo Ghetto, is back with two new singles: Bata (Warrior’s Dance) and Igara (The King of The Streets).

These two singles, according to him, signify his return to the industry. “Leaving the industry for a while to further my education was a tough decision because my passion has and will always be music. Now that I am back to the game, I want everyone to know that the king of the streets is back,” he said.

Speaking further on how he intends to establish himself as the king of street music genre, he said: “I would rely on the quality of my jobs, love and support from fans. The sky is the starting point. Omo Ghetto is a track that brought me out as a musician; and now, these two new songs are just a little bit of what I have in store for my fans and all those who love good music.”

I’ve never been promiscuous, but…–Nollywood star, Jennifer Eliogu

Jennifer Eliogu means many things to many people: actress, singer and master of ceremonies. The mother of two, who is billed to perform at the Women in Leadership Conference in Atlanta soon, dropped three new singles a few weeks ago. In this interview with MERCY MICHAEL, she speaks on her music career, family and scandals, among other issues.

IT was reported recently that you would be performing at the African Women in Leadership Conference in Atlanta. How did you get on that platform?

You see, sometimes, people look at the greater picture, but they don’t see the little beginning. I cannot say that I got on the platform because I am the best. I think it’s just by God’s favour. Someone listened to my songs and said they were beautiful. So, I contacted the organisers and told them I am into music and that I am an African woman. I also told them that I have paid my dues as an actor and that I’m also paying my dues as a singer.  I also told them I could send them my songs and they said: “Okay.” So, I sent them about three of my songs and they said: “Oh! This is nice!” I’m one person who doesn’t let opportunity slip off my hand. When you want something, you go for it. When you have a passion for something, you go for it.

Would you say your music has been accepted by the Nigerian music audience?

I am not singing to impress anybody. I’m living my dream. I am revealing my passion for music. Besides, my kind of music might appeal to one person and not appeal to another. I sing songs that suit my personality. It’s a process, so I take every opportunity that comes. I have a live band of 10 members. We do birthdays, weddings etc. It’s the beginning for me. But the pace at which this is coming is amazing for me. Professionally, I’ve had Silk Band for less than two years. But my band is good. We’ve got some young, very vibrant and brilliant musicians in my band. I had started doing live performances before I started recording songs. For me, I love to do live performances. I go to the studio, record with my voice, without auto tune. And then, I’m able to play the same way I sing in the studio on stage.

I think people are beginning to accept that you are in music for real. Could you share with me some of the challenges you have been facing since you launched your music career?

You see, the fact that people know me as an actor makes it almost difficult. One is trying hard to convince people that one can also sing, in addition to being an actor. Some people claim that most Nollywood actors try to sing, but they don’t get it right. However, I don’t let that discourage me because I’m not everybody else. And truthfully, if anybody wakes up tomorrow and says, ‘I want to sing’, I don’t think anybody has the right to hold him or her back, except him or herself. If you believe in yourself and your gift, then, explore it. I’m not going to let somebody tell me whether I’m good or not. So, I will be sincere with myself. If I’m not good at it, I’m not good at it.

The challenges that come with it are that people say my songs are mature and that I am more on the elegant side. This is me. I’m not a very good dancer, but I try. I have songs that are danceable. But really, I wouldn’t go the extreme or lose my personality because I need to play songs of today. But I have plans. I’m working with a couple of people. So, I will end up doing collabos with a few people. But the truth is, no matter what the genre of songs I do, I’m not going to lose my real self. That’s the truth.

How would you describe your genre of music?

That’s where I have a problem. I don’t know because I just love music, generally. I do a bit of R n B, Soul and highlife. I grew up loving Highlife because my father loves Highlife. Then, my mother loves love songs by Gribs Richard, Everly Brothers etc. So, I grew up singing to those songs. And then, I have people who love reggae. So, I started loving reggae because my elder sister loves reggae. So, you find out that I do a bit of everything, including inspirational songs. I’m a very good Christian and I don’t need to prove it by wearing a very long dress or by not wearing makeup. But I have a beautiful relationship with my God. I have the gift to write, so I write my songs. Someday, I’m going to do songs written by someone else. But so far, for every song I have written and sung, people always wonder who wrote the song.

How do you get inspiration to write?

I don’t know. For instance, I just did a new song I will be performing at the Women in Leadership Conference. How did I come about it? I just thought we are talking Africa, so we should address something that has to do with Africa and not love, beauty or just being a woman. In other words, I feel we should talk about our roles as women and mothers. We are home keepers and if we do the much that we can, each and every one of us will be better for it. It just occurred to me that I have beautiful songs already, so why don’t I do something that will last for a long time? Then, I came up with another song; I played it because I like to play my songs for people to criticise or commend. Everyone who listened to these songs said they are beautiful. It’s encouraging when you hear that. So, I have selective hearing right now to people who say, ‘Why don’t you stick to movies? Why don’t you stick to producing?’ No, I don’t want to listen to them.

When did your love for singing start?

I started writing songs a long time ago. I will tell you something.  I did a song, Fantasy, in 2003, but it has just been released. The video was shot in the UK. I’ve always done live performances for fun and I do MC jobs. As far back as 1999 or 2000, I was supposed to do a song with Sammy Okposo. We went into the studio and Sammy said: “You have to do this song; you are a good artiste.” So, I said, ‘Okay, tomorrow now. Let’s not do it now. Today, I am not ready.’ But we ended up not doing that song. There are few people who know that I sing. But I was doing it for fun. People would call me to come do sound tracks for their movies. I did lots of Karaokes. We sing a lot in my home; my mum has an amazing voice.

Acting- wise, what have you been up to and how do you intend to combine both?

You see, it’s interwoven. Abroad, most actors are singers and most singers end up acting. So, why can’t we do it in Nigeria? You want perfection, but nothing is perfect anywhere. There is no perfect human being. Accept people for whom they are and encourage them if you can. Where you don’t like what you see, close your eyes.  Do you know the trend? If one person says, ‘I like it’, then, everybody likes it. Also, if one person says, ‘I don’t like it’, then, everybody says, ‘I don’t like it.’ So, I just put it out there and allow people feel free to listen and comment. Every song I put out there, I get commendations. How many of my songs have you heard? You have to listen. As I said, I do different genres, mostly love songs for humanity, for my beau and for my children. I did a song and I intend to do the video; and I’m going to dance because I want to challenge myself.

I wonder if you are still challenged, as it were, as an actor.

No! It’s been 17 long years.

When last did you hit location?

I think November or December when I shot on Emem Isong’s set.  The movie, Lonely Heart, is out now. I appreciate that because they are people who know the talent that you have and they appreciate you for who you are. I don’t believe I have to play a lead role to be a good actor. Give me one scene and I will give it my best. I go the extra mile to deliver my role and get you to say, ‘Oh! She killed it!’ I can only dream to have roles that challenge me. There is a script that I wrote and I’m talking to a group of people to see how we work on it. There is a character in that script which, if I have to play it, I’m sure it will get people saying, ‘What the hell!’ It’s not nudity or vulgar, but it is something that challenges me so much that people are going to be like, ‘Wow!’

You claimed to be a very good Christian, but how do you balance it with some of the roles you have played?

Spirituality has become commercial. But your relationship with God is personal. God knows the real me; He knows my heart. Naturally, I don’t act roles that are over-bored. But if I have to interpret my role by having to kiss someone in the movie, I will. This is what I have chosen to do. And if God did not sanction it, I won’t be excelling in what I’m doing. But as a Christian, I know what is right and what is wrong. And I’m a mother; I am still raising my children. When you are single, there are so many things that could pass. We are human beings, so we make mistakes and learn from them. I’m not one that dwells on mistakes. If I try it and it doesn’t work for me, I won’t try it again. I don’t see anything as impossibility. But there are rules I have laid down for myself, which I will not cross.

Is any of your kids interested in acting?

My daughter, I think.  And you know how girls do. She wears your clothes; wears your wig and your shoes (I wear size 39 and she wears 37 now) and so on. Every time she wears my shoes, she will say: “In another six months, I will inherit these shoes.” She wants to hold the microphone and sing; she also tries to write something and sings it to me, which makes me laugh.

How does her father feel about it?

She is a little girl. Generally, daddies are excited about their daughters. So, it’s okay. When they are growing up, it’s good to see them wear short dresses, makeup and all that. Every parent is excited about that. And then, you guide your child and the path you want him or her to toe.You tell them life is not just about making up, dressing up, appearing before people and singing. You also have to know that you need to have a relationship with God. And when you do that, every other thing falls into place. I try to do that every day. I’m not a very religious person, but I have a beautiful relationship with God.

Are you done making babies now?

You know, sometimes, you say you are done and then something happens (laughs). So, I don’t know. But so far, I have two: my daughter is eight and my son is five.

Two is not enough…

You know how much dem dey pay for school fees? My mother had seven and I am number four.  Well, we lost our baby brother. And I have a wonderful life. If there is a next life time, I want to have my siblings. I just have an amazing family. Everyone cares for everyone; your success is everybody’s happiness. My elder brother is into entertainment as well. He lives in Hong Kong and has a clothing line. Then, my young brother is a doctor/pharmacist in the United States. The elder is a lecturer; my immediate elder sister is a newscaster with NTA and my younger sister used to work with Zenith Bank. So, I just have a wonderful family. But overall, one thing we have is love and laughter.

Among all the scandals that have ever been written about you, which one hit you the most?

They all hit you. But if you’ve noticed over the years, I’m not one that dignifies scandals. Yes, sometimes, there is an atom of truth, but people blow it out of proportion. We all go through challenges in life. I’m not that person who wants to sing about my challenges. I cry to God and I talk to my family. I know that every piece of advice and support I need, they have. The last time I checked, people’s opinions cannot buy a cup of garri. What is the point? They never have anything positive to say. You’re going into a marriage, they say, ‘Don’t worry, she go soon come out, no be actress? It’s so negative; it’s not good.

You pray for people. Because the truth is, people do not know the challenges we have, as actors and actresses. You work twice as hard to keep your home because your business is everybody’s business and your business is everybody’s business. So, you need God to work with you, every step of the way, to make it work. Outside the industry, people are going through a lot. But you don’t know because you don’t know them. And then, you confide in your friend about your problem. But she leaves you, run to the nearest market place, refurbish the story and tell it the way it suits her. So, you find out that sometime, you just want to shut your mouth because the only one that can change anything is God and I go to Him. I don’t need anybody’s opinion. If I have to talk to anybody, it’s someone who probably might give spiritual advice or someone who will add value.

How does your husband handle the fact that you are beautiful and men will definitely want you?

That’s one of the challenges people have. I cannot tell you that my marriage is perfect. Like in all my interviews, I keep saying, yes it is a challenge, but the challenge is not because I’m an actress. My challenge is not because I am promiscuous, unless it is coming from the devil himself. I’ve never been known to be promiscuous. But people chose to say what they want to say. It’s their business. As I said, their opinions do not pay for anything. I cannot buy anything with their opinions; so, it’s okay. But what I am saying is, we are human beings. You have your shortcomings and I have mine. There was a time they wrote that I was ill, but I don’t know where that came from. Someone said I had ulcer or asthma and then, it went viral. Is it now for me to come out and start shouting that it’s a lie? How many of these stories are you going to debunk?

Some of your fans still believe that your marriage has crashed?

As I keep saying, when it comes to my personal life, any day I make up my mine to speak about my personal life, I will speak about everything that concerns my personal life. But to answer questions, just to quell people’s taste, I won’t do that. I always keep my family out of the media. Someday will come when you’ll sit down and we’ll talk about it. And that is because I want to talk about it. But to talk about because people want to hear it is not going to happen.

But would you say you made the right choice about your marriage?

I didn’t choose because I finished secondary school in 1992 and I started having suitors. So, every now and then, my father would say to me, ‘You know that my friend’s son is due for marriage. And I would say, ‘Ogwuefi, don’t start…’ He was concerned about me settling down. He felt you’re young, you’re beautiful but your profession is not the right one. That’s what people used to think. Those days, it was almost a taboo to say that your child is an actress. Today, people come to beg so that their children can act. That’s how time has evolved.

So, when I met my husband, after two years, I felt like, okay, I’m ready now. It wasn’t like I said, if I’m not up to this age, I will not marry. And I didn’t marry too early anyway because I was 29. I was mature. But sometimes, you don’t make the best decision based on age. You make the best decision based on God’s grace and then your ability to discern. Do you understand? So far, we give God the glory.

How do you ward off male admirers?

I have a way of warding off nicely when they become very persistent. If I have to be rude to get you off my back, I will be rude. It’s also fun when you have admirers. You wake up every morning and you say, Thank you, Lord. You’re not the prettiest, but then, you will be counted among.

The petite actress was reported to have said that she cannot just settle down with anybody who comes her way, stressing that she does not want to rush into marriage and later rush out of it.

She said men had trust issues, which is why a lot of them find it difficult to identify a lady who truly loves them.

“There is a lot of mistrust and we also have many irresponsible men, so to speak. There are lots and lots of liars among men out there. And if they meet a girl who really loves them, they won’t know because they are used to lying,” the actress stated.

Why I’m not in a relationship now–JODIE

When Joy Odiete, popularly known as Jodie, dropped her single, Kuchi Kuchi (Oh Baby) about three years ago, her name instantly soared high on the wings of that soulful tune. The song was most welcome by music buffs who were already tired of listening to lewd lyrics that had almost become a fad. With her signature African hair, the petite singer has evolved over the years. In this interview with MERCY MICHAEL, Jodie speaks about her personal style and relationship, among other issues. Excerpts:

YOU look absolutely stunning…   Well, I’m wearing Baron by Wendy Samanti. I saw the shoes at a shop and I liked it. I honestly just want to do something different tonight. I’m still wearing my 100% virgin hair; I just combed it out.

How do you define your style?

I’m still African, just a little touch on it. You know, I was a lot more conservative. I decided to spice it by adding a little more colour. So, I’m still African. Besides, Africa has a lot of colours, so I decided to add that part of it.

How long do you intend to keep your natural hair?

I don’t mind fixing, braiding and all that, but I do not ever want to perm my hair. I love the texture of African hair. I think everybody should embrace it (laughs). It’s just that a lot of people don’t know how to take care of it. But now, there is a movement or a sort of revolution and people are getting more educated about African hair; so, it is beautiful.

What is that clothing item you won’t be caught wearing?

I have not thought it through. Honestly, I don’t know. I can’t even think of one thing I can’t be caught wearing right now. This is because change is a constant thing. What you think is not cool today might be so cool tomorrow. When I started carrying my hair, I cut of my perm.  I was then at the University of Lagos, Akoka and everybody was like, ‘What is this?’ And at a point, I was ashamed as well. That was because at that time, it wasn’t a fad, so to say. It wasn’t fashionable; but now, it’s fashionable. I’m not sure I want to nail it yet, maybe when I’m 70. The truth is I’m very young and I’m still learning much more about myself.

You said when you started, it wasn’t cool. But what spurred you to continue?

Even then, people loved it. Yes, my schoolmates found it strange. But more people are embracing the look now. That is because it’s beautiful. It’s something that people have gradually come to embrace. And I think it has come to stay. In the next 20 years, maybe more ladies in Africa will wear their natural hair.

Would you have been carrying a kinky hair, if it wasn’t for branding?

Actually, when I decided to go kinky, it wasn’t a brand thing because I was in school then. I had not even decided to be a professional singer. So, my kinky hair is more of my lifestyle, even before my life on stage.

Musically, what’s happening with Jodie?

I just came out with a new single titled Season, which is two weeks old. It’s gaining ground. People love it, when they hear it; it’s mid-tempo. It gives a sense of hope. Although people still want me to do a party song, I will do that soon. But Season is doing really well. It was trending on Twitter in Nigeria and the UK a few days back. And I know there is a lot I can offer.

When you released Kuchi Kuchi, it was an instant success. So, when are we going to have another Kuchi kuchi?

I don’t know. The truth is music is something you can’t really predict all the time. Sometimes, you can try to do all the right things, but it may not be accepted the way you want it to be. So, I didn’t plan to make Kuchi Kuchi become a hit. I just wanted to taste the waters with a song, so I chose Kuchi Kuchi and it blew. So, I’m just hoping, believing that God will drop in my heart songs that people will love. I’m still here and I pray for long life. While I’m still here, I will keep singing.

There is this glow about you; does it have something to do with someone in your life?

You mean there wasn’t a glow before (laughs). Okay. I know what you are talking about. The truth is we learn every day. I’m sure five years or 10 years ago, you were not like this. I think things happen, good or bad, and they culminate and make you who you are in the present. I think a few things have happened in my life and I’ve learnt a lot.  I’m still learning. And this glow, I believe, is just the beginning.

You once said you were not in a relationship. Have you found someone now?

Honestly, it’s like life has just begun for me. And I want to really calm down first. There is so much good out there and I mean it in the good sense. It is not because I want to just be some loose person out there, but it is because I’m learning a lot. I’m sure if I settled for what I thought was the best yesterday, maybe I won’t have been satisfied today. So, I’m actually taking it easy; and with God’s inspiration, prayers and everything, I’m sure I will make the right choice.

Do you consider being in a relationship a distraction? I mean could that be why you’re taking your time?

I don’t consider a relationship a distraction. I consider a relationship with a wrong person a distraction. Certainly, you can’t ask for anything better if you are in a relationship with the right person.

Who is your ideal man?

When I was in the primary school, my idea man was tall, yellow-I didn’t say fair, but yellow with curly hair, perhaps, half-caste. But now, my idea man is someone whom I have some connection with. And this is much more than physical. I still don’t mind a fine guy. In fact, I like a fine, comfortable guy who will support me, love me and support my career. In fact, I still pray for a fine guy. But much more than the physical, I want someone who I believe that when we are in the relationship and when we get married and have kids, I keep saying, ‘Oh! God, thank you!’

What informs the kind of clothes you wear to an event?

For now, I just know that I want my dress to be fitted. I want it to be comfortable. I normally would wear a long dress, but I like to experiment sometimes.

What kind of clothes do you like to wear?

I like to wear clothes that have African touch to it, but not totally African. I still want some contemporary things around it and I still obviously love my hair.

Academy Award-winning actor, Al Pacino, will grace the stage for a look back at his distinguished career at the third annual Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) Gala, an exclusive charity event designed to kick-off the 39th edition of the festival.

A statement from TIFF secretariat revealed that the on-stage conversation with Mr. Pacino will be followed by a glamorous cocktail dinatoire, musical performances, a live auction and more. The event takes place at TIFF Bell Lightbox on September 3, at 7 p.m.

“We’re thrilled to have Al Pacino participate in our third annual TIFF Gala,” said Maxine Bailey, Vice President of Advancement at TIFF. “This important event raises much-needed funds that allow TIFF to continue our free year-round activities like Reel Comfort, a programme that brings films and special guests to mental health patients at Toronto hospitals, and Pocket Fund, which provides subsidies for children and families who would otherwise be unable to participate in our educational and cultural programming.”

“This year’s event is sure to be a party like no other,” said Lisa de Wilde, Chair of TIFF’s Board of Directors. “In its first two years, the TIFF Gala has raised more than $1 million to help fund our philanthropic activities. Whether you are an Al Pacino fan, a film lover or are just looking for a unique and inspirational night out, we encourage audiences to join us and show their support for TIFF.”

Al Pacino, an eight-time Academy Award nominee, stars in two films in official selection at the festival: Manglehorn and The Humbling.

After having received Best Actor nominations for And Justice for All, The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon and Serpico, Pacino won an Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in Scent of a Woman. He also won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Roy Cohn in HBO’s award-winning adaptation of Angels in America. Pacino who made his professional acting debut off-Broadway, has won two Tony awards and received the Cecil B. De Mille Award from the Hollywood Foreign Press in 2001. Pacino directed and starred in the film Looking for Richard, a meditation on Shakespeare’s Richard III, for which he received the Outstanding Directorial Achievement For a Documentary award from the Director’s Guild of America. In June 2007, he received AFI’s highest honour for a career in film, the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award. Pacino recently directed an independent documentary based on Oscar Wilde’s Salome, titled Wilde Salome.

The organisers said proceeds from the Gala enable TIFF to continue creating and inspiring a community of engaged film-lovers, while supporting the careers of emerging filmmakers through a variety of year-round programmes at TIFF Bell Lightbox.  Tickets to the TIFF Gala are $1,500, an equivalent of N243, 825.
